Young, Female & Forgotten? 2017
Young, Female & Forgotten? The Final Report
In the most comprehensive study of its kind, led by Professor Sue Maguire of the University of Bath and supported by Barrow Cadbury Trust and the Sir Halley Stewart Trust, we have analysed a wide range of data, spoken to policymakers and service providers and carried out interviews with young women themselves.
Our research found that hundreds of thousands of young women without a job are being written off as economically inactive and going without support to find employment, despite many of them having good qualifications and wanting to work.
The research, which is co-funded by the Barrow Cadbury Trust and the Sir Halley Stewart Trust and carried out with Professor Sue Maguire of the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath, also shows that mental ill-health, which affects more women than men, increases the risk of becoming economically inactive – but that there is a lack of support available. Our report calls on the government to take action.
