ONS figures deeply concerning news for young women

Tuesday 11 August 2020

Responding to latest ONS employment figures, Sophie Walker, Chief Executive of Young Women’s Trust:

“Today’s ONS figures showing a slump of nearly a quarter of a million in employment in the UK in the last quarter is deeply concerning news for young women. We know that women and young people have been on the front line of the economic and domestic fall of out this crisis and risk being left behind in its wake.

“These figures are also sadly the tip of the iceberg and we are bracing ourselves for the end of the furlough scheme in October when things are expected to get worse. We ask the Government to urgently call on businesses to publish break downs of how many job losses and redundancies are made up by women and young people.

“We need the Government to publish a plan for women. Young women need and deserve so much more than the hard-hat, jobs-for-men tired, traditional schemes seen so far. They also deserve investment in flexible, affordable care which can create twice as many jobs, higher tax revenues and lower barriers to work for so many.”
