Response to IFS Report - Equality Remains Far From Reach

Wednesday 27 May 2020

Responding to IFS report How are mothers and fathers balancing work and family under lockdown?, Joe Levenson, Director of Communications and Campaigns at the Young Women’s Trust said:

“As we approach the fiftieth anniversary of the Equal Pay Act this Friday, these findings confirm what many women know to be true: that equality remains far from reach both at home and at work.

“We know from speaking to young women that they are already first in line for job losses, struggling to make ends meet as a result and are overwhelmed with the amount of childcare and unpaid household tasks they have to do. We are really worried about what impact this is going to have on their career prospects and increased chances of redundancy as the country begins to return to normal under the cloud of an enormous and unprecedented recession.

“It is not right that women are bearing the brunt of this pandemic. We urge the government to fast track an equality impact assessment to get to the root of this problem and make sure protections are in place to guarantee that women are not penalised by their employers as they continue to care for children as schools slowly reopen.”
